As you can see from the last “Nuff Said” post, things haven’t improved much lately. I don’t know what’s the matter with me. All the devices that kept me going last year have completely broken down. My inspiration simply vanished in a puff of potato chips. Hrmph.

I feel like it all bottomed out (yet again) last weekend. I won’t bore you with the details except to say it was wall to wall eating. For now, all you need to know is that it produced my most recent Day One: yesterday, May 27, 2008.

So how did my latest and greatest Day One go? Well, I’ve had better and I’ve had worse. I started on a good foot. Mostly. I still have to figure out a way to solve the peanut butter problem. In case you don’t know, I like peanut butter. A lot. I sum it up pretty well in the book on page 31:

“I can’t even imagine a world without peanut butter. I like all types too. From the raw paste you get from grinding your own in the store to the smoothest, lard-laden, trans-fat enriched commercial stuff, solely meant to be spread on Wonder bread with grape jelly. It’s all good—and it’s always been one of my bigger weaknesses. It’s not unusual to find a big jar of it on my desk at work. In fact, “on my desk” is where it spends the least amount of time as I typically keep the jar strapped to my muzzle like a feedbag, much to the alarm of my co-workers.”

The best vehicle for moving gobs of the butter into one’s mouth is the apple. It’s almost a breakfast fixture for me. Trouble is, it takes a lot of peanut butter to get me through one apple. I measured the exact amount yesterday and it’s such an alarmingly large number, I refuse to share it with you.

Oh well. Minor bump. The remainder of the workday went well (and we’ll just pretend the candy incident didn’t happen). Then around quittin’ time I get an instant message:

laura: Rachel wants to go out for her birthday dinner.
me:    Where?
laura: Hold on, let me ask her again...

I wait a few minutes. The reply comes through. “Red Robin.”

Oh no. Not Red Robin. Not again. Why? WHY????

a1-burger.jpgSo we head out to Red Robin. Again. *sigh* But there is a silver lining to this greasy cloud. In fact, I think I did pretty well given the circumstances. The first win was resisting the temptation to order the Tower of Onion Rings (even after the birthday girl pouted about not getting them). The second win was eating only a third of my burger. That’s right. One third of it. I don’t think such a thing has ever happened before. The only fractions of burgers I’ve ever eaten before have all been improper. So this was a big step forward for me. Alas, the only test I failed was the fries. I ate all mine and at least a few off of every other plate on the table. I’m not sure, but I may have started eating fries off adjacent tables.

All told, my day one racked up over 2700 calories. Not exactly the plan I had in mind, but I woke up today at the same weight, so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I am pretty sure french fries from other tables don’t count as calories so much as “petty theft”.

I am totally helpless in the face of all potato products. I truly think they are growing some hybrid version now with it’s own form of potato heroin built right in.

Is there a 12 step program for us potato heads? “Hello my name is *** and I am a potato-holic”??

Having PB in the house ALWAYS leads to trouble. Stressed out? PB. Bored? PB. Hungry? PBPBPB. Bad news because it’s so difficult to limit the quantity – if I had any sort of self control, it would be a nutritious food for me.
PS apples and PB is such a good treat – reminds me of childhood. That and Ants on a Log.
