“It’s the most wonderful tiiiiiiime of the year…” Whoops! Sorry, wrong holiday. But I still feel about the same way. I’m sure Andy Williams does too.
And it’s doubly good that Halloween falls on Pizza Night this year. Though frankly, every Halloween is pizza night in our house. For the same reasons pizza is convenient on Friday nights, it’s convenient on holidays as well. I highly recommend it for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, … heck, come to think of it, I can’t think of a single holiday where pizza isn’t appropriate.
The typical Halloween day goes something like this:
- Wake up.
- Go to work.
- Leave work early to make it home for my favorite holiday.
- Mad scramble to get kids dressed in their costumes and ready to hit the streets.
- Mad scramble to finally put up the decorations we’ve been trying to get put up for the last three weeks.
- Wracking my brain for a pumpkin carving idea.
- Realizing we don’t actually have any pumpkins.
- Mad scramble to buy pumpkins.
- Begin carving pumpkins about twenty minutes before Trick or Treating begins.
- Realizing I’ve chosen a three hour carving task.
- Realizing I’m hungry.
- Pizza time!
Our favorite kind of pizza for the Halloween Scramble is: frozen. Yep. No carry out. No ordering in. Just flip on the oven and throw in a disk of mozzarella coated cardboard. It’s quick. It’s easy. It only costs about two bucks. Everyone’s happy.
If you’re asking what kind of frozen pizza, well, there’s really only one. Tostinos:
It’s America’s best selling frozen pizza for a reason: because I’ve purchased several million of them. Hopefully a few of you will go out and buy a couple and help pick up the slack a little.
Now, with my tummy full and my pumpkin half carved, it’s time to resume the final steps of the evening:
- Set pumpkins on fire.
- Send kids on a candy-finding mission.
- Sit out on the front porch, wearing plaid shorts and black socks.
- Hand out candy to three year olds and seventeen year olds (there are rarely any kids in between).
- Wait for kids to return.
- Raid the candy bags, extracting every Almond Joy or Mounds bar I find.
Lastly, when the candles have burned low and the streets are quiet, I bring in the pumpkins, turn to say farewell to the evening, and shed a metaphorical tear for another pumpkin season come and gone in the blink of an eye.
Then I eat all that candy.

Trying to eat right and buy healthy foods is hard enough as it is. But then we have to deal with highly paid marketing departments whose sole purpose is to trick us into buying crap we don’t need. Now I can’t really fault them for that. That is, of course, their job. They get paid […]

“Boys and girls of every age, wouldn’t you like to see something strange?” Yes, kids, this is Halloween—and just about the bestest time of the year. I love the change in the weather, the honeycrisp apples, the pounds and pounds of Mounds candy bars, and most of all: carving pumpkins. The annual carving ritual started […]

Many moons ago, when I was younger (as opposed to ‘many moons ago when I was older’?) a small group of friends set out on a quest: find large cheeseburgers and eat them. It began innocently enough with a set of Hardee’s Monster Burgers and ended with a four-pound Grandma Max Burger. At the time, […]

You could say that William “Braveheart” Wallace was a man with a mission. He had a clear vision, a strong sense of purpose, and a really nice kilt. He believed in something and fought to his death to achieve it. I’d like to think that Charlie “Brave-stomach” Hills is not unlike him. I too have […]

Dear Subway, My name is Charlie. You might recognize me. We first met back in college, when a group of friends and I decided to go out for a quick bite. “What is this wonderful place?” I thought to myself as I gazed across two yards of sandwich fixins. (Keep in mind, this was from […]

If you were to ask random people on the street what they’d do if they won a very large lottery jackpot, you’d get a wide array of answers … yet all of them would more or less zero in on the same point. “I’d buy a big house!” “I’d buy a big boat!” “I’d buy […]

Zombie kid says it all. I like cheeseburgers. There are many words I like to use to describe them, but one stands out in particular. And that word is: elegant. I’m sure this isn’t the word that springs to most minds. This adjective is normally applied to objects of a high grade or quality. However, […]

Dorothy felt trapped on the farm. She knew there must be more to life than counting chicken eggs and hanging out with Hunk, Zeke, and Hickory. There was a wonderful world out there somewhere over the rainbow. A life with meaning. A life of happiness. Heck, a life in color. Taking a page out of […]

One or two of you might have been wondering when I’d finally get around to talking about pizza in the Pizza Night category. I was hoping to save it for a special occasion—and I did! It’s a little occasion I like to call “writer’s block.” And what’s a better cure for writer’s block than rambling […]

While most of us think we’re our own worst enemies when it comes to sticking to the plan, it’s easy to overlook the saboteurs. You know who I’m talking about. The spouse, the kids, the grandparents, the evil stepmother. It could be anyone, but they all share an important attribute: they bring their food into […]

It was an evening in the fall of 1991 and I was watching television. A movie came on which I’d seen many times before, but decided to watch the end again anyway, in the hopes that for once I might figure out what happened. It was 2001: A Space Odyssey. At the point where HAL […]

Life is full of small pleasures if you know where to look. And if for some reason you don’t know where to look, then I suggest trying the canned food aisle at your local grocery store. There you just might find bliss in a small red, white, and yellow can. Spaghettios (which, for some reason, […]

Here are two more things you should know about me. I’m a picky eater and I hate spending money. This is an absolutely insurmountable combination when it comes to highfalutin fancy food. With October here and fall squarely upon us (at least for those of us who live above 35°N) our thoughts turn to raking leaves, carving pumpkins, and eating mountains and mountains of Fun Sized Three Musketeers bars. I don’t watch a lot of TV. Now don’t worry, it’s not because I’m some sort of snob who believes television is evil and should be abolished along with Twinkies and water bottles. On the contrary. If I weren’t so busy with a million other things everyday, you’d easily find me fixed to the couch […]

Totino’s is terrible pizza. But, once in a while I do get a craving for it. I haven’t had a really good pizza since I left Chicago for the east coast.
on October 31, 2008 at 9:58 am
Charlie, I should ship you some of my homemade pizzas! I can freeze them and put them on dry ice for you!
I haven’t had Totino’s pizza in about 15 years!

I usually try to scam the butterfingers and snickers! And of course M & M’s.

Oh and Biz, if you are offering homemade pizzas to one sibling, you have to offer them to the other one!
Ha! And, I live closer to you!!

When I’m craving some nostalgia I eat a Tostinos pizza.
Otherwise, my new at home fix is the not frozen one at Walmart/Sam’s. It’s in the refrigerated section, near the deli in my store and it’s 5 bucks. It’s all ready to bake and eat. I think it’s the same pizza they serve at the Sam’s Club snack bars–so if you’ve eaten that pizza you’ll know beforehand if you’ll like it. I think it tastes the best.
After that the Brick Oven frozen one’s pretty good, though kind of expensive for frozen pizza.

I haven’t thought about Totino’s in forever. My parents spend $2 on the pizza and $12 on ingredients to “doctor it up”.
If you wouldn’t mind, please extract a few 3 Musketeers from the kiddies’ goodie bags and send to me ASAP. Appreciate it.

Ok that is too funny! Trying to picture the plaid shorts and black socks look! 🙂 lol The whole night pretty much sounds like ours! 🙂 (and I’m one of those with a 3yr old AND a teenager tricking treating together, lol) Although last yr my teen scared the bajeebers out of most people while out trick or treating as he stood at each door in his very life like monkey mask at 6ft tall! Thinking we wont do that again this year! haha. Hey, thanks for the tip on Totinos. I’ll try one. My son likes Tony’s but for $2 I’ll try the other. 🙂 Happy Halloween!

Sorry Charlie~we don’t like Totino’s in this house. If it has to be frozen, it’s got to be Red Baron. And Cammy, we doctor ours up too !!! If it’s the fresh not frozen, I’m with Dinah Soar, Sam’s has the best. I like the veggie one, my dh the all meat.
In all fairness, I haven’t had a Totino’s in like….20 yrs. so I’ll try one and see if my taste buds have changed. It’s said they do every 7 yrs., but I’ve never noticed it if they have.
