Enough Wasn’t Enough

Back in June, when I got fed up, I really thought I had what I needed to get my rear in gear. Apparently, enough wasn’t enough.

I tried, then slipped, then tried again, then slipped again. At least fifteen of the days since were spent on trips to three different cities—never a good thing for a diet. That said, on my last trip (just last week: hence the lack of posts), I really tried to eat light. For example, I’d order a side of potatoes or just toast for breakfast. Lunches would be small sandwiches and no chips. Dinners were (for the most part) equally austere. Sure, one or two meals were a little nicer than normal, but I really stuck at it; I really tried to prove to myself I wouldn’t let a little thing like business travel be an excuse to eat absolutely anything.

Got back and I weighed exactly what I weighed when I left. Granted, I wasn’t expecting miracles. I honestly didn’t think skipping a bag of Doritos would translate into ten lost pounds. But it was still a bit disheartening. Worse, since returning, I’ve actually gone back up a pound or two, right back to the most recent Day One number.

So . . .

What next? Well, for now, I think nothing. The Year of Failure continues and, for now, I’m just going to try to ride it out. The body does what the body does and rarely consults with us before coming to its decisions. This doesn’t mean “free for all” time. I’m not going to lose my head over it. But at the very least I’m going to try to stop pretending I’m actually on any sort of plan.

I’ll keep checking in each week. I may even post something odd on Thursdays. I may even introduce you to my other blog. So no worries, my two dozen fans, I’ll still be around for a while! Every last pound of me. 🙂

The Year of Failures is only 7 months over, there are still 5 months to go…and staying at the same weight isn’t a failure, it’s maintaining.

Keep on posting – I’ve missed you the last week!

Have you incorporated any kind of exercise into your lifestyle? That almost always helps. Also, following some kind of a plan helps. If the body isn’t getting enough food the metabolism slows down, so getting enough food is also important.

I’m chuggin along too…. .2 lb.s here, .4 lbs. there. The older we get, the longer it takes. I’m just happy when I see a little change every week.

Hang in there!

Just take one meal at a time – make a good choice at each meal and let that be your plan. if you go off plan at 10am be backon plan at 10.01am.
Maintaining is an at in itself 🙂

You nailed it. This is pretty much my one and only “plan” at the moment.

Awww…I’ll miss you. Except for the random Thursdays when you post. Then I’ll enjoy you.

And I mean that in a much less weird way than it might have come across. 🙂

Don’t call it the Year of Failure!

Call it the Year of Changing Things Up or something else – you’re a writer think of something.

After years and years of trying to lose 30 lbs. via calorie counting, I stopped. I’ve been eating by hunger only and my weight is, strangely, inching down.

Changing Things Up.

I love your writing style. I would like to be among your dozens of fans on the “other” blog.

@Michelle: yes, “maintaining” is better than gaining. I’ll go with that. 🙂

@inannasstar: no, I haven’t yet done any exercising. It’s on my todo list.

@Happy/Smaller Fun Pants: miss me? I’m not going anywhere. The plan is to still post Tuesdays and occasionally Thursdays. Though, now that I look back at what I wrote, that wasn’t entirely clear. 🙂

@Helen: Your post made me think of the “Time to Change” song by the Brady kids. Now I’m going to hear Peter’s voice cracking every five minutes today.

@Sandie & Shar & anyone else interested in the other blog: If you haven’t already guessed, it will be the one where I can focus on writing topics. Mixing writing and food in this one blog didn’t work very well. Just ask Happy Fun Pants. Anyway, more info on that Real Soon Nowâ„¢.

I think you should be happy you maintained while in Seattle – lobster popcorn? (and I really need to find a recipe for that!)

How did your soup turn out??

I want to see the new blog!

Love, your prettier sister Biz

Eating on the road can definately be a difficult obstacle when trying to eat healthy foods. My fiance has been thwarted in his dieting a few times due to work travel. Something we find useful is going to places that have healthy eating icons and weight watchers points and eat from those menus. He is working to get into the best shape of his life and is sticking to the diet every day until our wedding. He adresses eating on the road as well. If you have a minute check out his blog at http://www.theheavymansdiary.blogspot.com . Good luck!!

If it were easy, we’d all be skinny.

I am reading your book. Your sister sent it to me. She rocks. Your other sister sent me cheese. She rocks too. The book is awesome and I plan to do a review on it as soon as I am done. The cheese was good too.

Lose Weight, Feel Great!

July 15th, 2010

When I’m on a diet (which is essentially always), invariably at some point I’ll get hungry and go and do something stupid like eat seventeen orders of McDonald’s hash browns in a three minute period. When something like this happens (which is essentially always), invariably I feel guilty about it. Before you nod your head […]

Do Over

July 13th, 2010

One of humanity’s greatest inventions just happened to be developed by its most resourceful faction: kids. Over the ages, as children developed impromptu and casual sports such as kickball, four-square, or (my personal favorite) whack-each-other-with-sticks, they also developed the best unwritten rule ever: the Do Over. If both sides agree that a particular play just […]

Rerun: Words of Ill Omen

July 8th, 2010

Ah yes, the dreaded Cheez-It: encountered at Day 42 on my last Return to Onederland trip. This was a good post, not only because it dealt with the omnipresent Cheez-It issue, but also because I spoke of myself in the third person. Charlie should do that more often. The astute reader will also notice that […]

Back from Vacation

July 6th, 2010

I tell you, there’s nothing like spending the second week of a new diet program on the road. We left on Saturday, June 26, and got back just a few hours ago, around three in the morning. Zzzz… Over the years, I’ve learned there are many pairs of terms which should simply never be used […]

Rerun: Could Be Worse

July 1st, 2010

It’s funny sometimes how memory works (or doesn’t work). My general recollection of this last Return to Onederland trip is all rainbows and unicorns: at 224 pounds, I made up my mind to lose weight, then two or three weeks later, I hit 194 pounds. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but the […]
