One of humanity’s greatest inventions just happened to be developed by its most resourceful faction: kids. Over the ages, as children developed impromptu and casual sports such as kickball, four-square, or (my personal favorite) whack-each-other-with-sticks, they also developed the best unwritten rule ever: the Do Over. If both sides agree that a particular play just doesn’t fit their general expectations of game flow (say, a ball landing ambiguously on the “out” line or a stick unexpectedly breaking over one’s “head”) then by mutual agreement a “do over!” is called. Suddenly, and as if by magic, it’s as if the play-in-question never happened. What a wonderful concept.
I may no longer be twelve (at least on the outside) and perhaps I’ve lost my right to claim a Do Over, but I’m not sure what else to do here. I have to face the fact that this current diet plan has landed on the “out” line: smack on a spot not covered by the rule book and therefore I’m starting over. It would be great, of course, to just be able to repeat the most recent play. Unfortunately, I have to start the game all over.

Last week I’d just gotten back from vacation and I wasn’t sure how things turned out. I concluded with, “it’s time to go get on that scale again and discover the truth. Tune in next week for the results.” Well, it’s next week and—well, there are your results. They’re bad and so I’m calling “do over.” So as much as it pains me to say it, here we go: Welcome to Day One #102.

Last Wednesday I pulled a “Do Over” as well. I was doing CalorieKing.com and decided it just wasn’t “me” and I’ve gone to WW online. I’m feeling much more satisfied and not deprived at all.
Your spirits seem to be just where they should be. Keep on truckin on!

Hurray for Day One!

Just keep on trying Charlie. Don’t feel bad about it, just keep at. Afterall, the alternative is more and more weight and less and less good health?
Congrats on another Day 1 🙂

The “do over” is a great concept. Isn’t it amazing how much wisdom is hidden in our childhood games:)
I am a yo-yo dieter. Last summer I was at my goal weight and then I once again started regaining. I did not want to give in to the “do over” idea of starting back at step one of my diet plan. I felt like I could go from where I was and get back on track without going back to basics. I was wrong. Several months and pounds later, I got to where you seem to be today and started again. Fresh. From basics.

Thanks for the comments so far. Hopefully there’s enough good-will in them to eradicate the calories from the donut I just ate. Hooray for Day #2.

Not it! Do-overs are a gift – a great way to live in the present where anything is possible…like, say, only eating ONE donut instead of two because hey, I’ve already blown it by eating the first one and….
At least you are being honest with yourself about the need to start over which has to be a good sign.
