Celebrity Childhood Crush

Today’s post is sponsored by the book Why Your Last Diet Failed You and How This Book Won’t Help You on Your Next One. I have decided to plug it on the first Wednesday of each month, in honor of last month’s give-away. (Have either of the winners read it yet?) 🙂

Remember these key points about the book:

  1. It’s funny.
  2. It’s cheap.
  3. It makes a great Christmas present.
  4. You can line bird cages with it when you’re done.

A few months ago at work, someone started an email thread asking, “Who was your celebrity childhood crush?” Meaning, what celebrity did you have a crush on as a child and not what celebrity’s childhood did you have a crush on?

It was one of those questions that should have been easy. I mean, isn’t that just part of growing up? I’m sure I had dozens and dozens of celebrity crushes. But my poor remembery just ain’t what it used to be and I really had to wrack my brain to think of someone(s).

Of course, maybe that’s a good thing. Perhaps being able to instantly recall two dozen crushes from thirty years ago is not a feat you wish to trumpet. Anyway, it turned out to be a fun thread and I thought, why not start the same thing here amongst a slightly smaller audience? This could get interesting.

Being this post’s author, I shall begin, and I apologize in advance for all the testosterone. I won’t let it happen again.

ccc1As a child of the 70s, I just had to watch The Love Boat. It came on either just before or just after Fantasy Island and as near as I can tell, had all the exact same guest stars. While admittedly the bizarre Fantasy Island was a bit more in line with my offbeat tastes, the one thing it didn’t have was Lauren Tewes. I remember watching the show when I was thirteen or so, which is about the exact age you truly believe you can grow up and marry a TV star. Besides, she was only twelve years older. While 13 and 25 isn’t feasible, it worked out for Ashton and Demi, right?

ccc1Okay, now we’re more like twenty years apart, here. But that still didn’t matter when you’re talking about one of the coolest moms on the tube. I mean think about it, who was she up against around that time? Mrs. Cunningham? Ms. Romano? Sophia Petrillo? Although, I really can’t overlook Justine Bateman. She was pretty hot and we were the exact same age. Perhaps I should have written fan letters to her instead, and avoided all those pesky restraining orders. Ah, what would we do baby without us?

ccc1This one’s a no-brainer. In fact, I’m not even sure what to write except look at Princess Leia in the gold bikini. For those of us who grew up with her between 1977 and 1983, this scene was like suddenly seeing the girl next door on the beach in a bathing suit. I mean, you always figured she was a looker, even though you grew up right next door from her, but then to have it all laid out like this…wow. Unfortunately, Leia got dressed for the rest of the film. Fortunately, she didn’t kiss her brother again.

So there you have it, three childhood celebrity crushes. They’re not my top three, but that’s because of that memory problem I told you about earlier. If I think of what my real top three were, I’ll let you know. But don’t hold your breath.

Before wrapping this up, here are my votes in the category of Pairs of Female Television Show Stars Where The Hot One is Not Actually The Hot One:

ccc4

Now that I’ve completely dated myself, it’s your turn.

Andy Gibb and Shaun Cassidy. (These days I prefer my men a bit more “manly” looking – no offense to any teen heart throbs, of course.)

Love this post, especially the Hot One is not actually the Hot One. I am trying to think back to my celebrity crushes over the years. I guess, as a child, my biggest crush was Patrick Swayze when Dirty Dancing came out…oh man, did I just admit to that.

I LOOOOOVED Ralph from the Greatest American Hero. (sigh) Fine. His “real” name is William Katt. Anyway, he was oh-so dreamy. And clumsy. And he could fly. Pretty much the trifecta of the perfect guy. Of course, I was six or seven at the time…

As I got older I had crushes on Cary Elwes and Tom Cruise (two words, Top Gun!).

(sigh)

This is even tougher for me. I gotta think back 50 years. Lets see…….the only one that comes to mind is Ricky Nelson. I never missed an episode of Ozzie and Harriot.

Oh man…I was totally in LOVE with a backstreet boy…TOTALLY. And not the clean cut pretty one…the one with all the tattoos and piercings. I won’t pretend I don’t remember his name (cough *AJ* cough) and I am pretty sure every password I created from the age of 13 to 18 included those two letters…

I also had a SERIOUS thing for (Oh God…) Don Johnson. Yeah he was only about 25 years too old for me at the time but Nash Bridges was my absolute favorite show on the planet!

I also had a thing for Hayden Christenson (finally someone my age). But this was before he was a big deal. He was on this show called higher ground playing this really messed up kid…but he stole my heart with his disturbing issues.

First, let me say I’m so glad you liked the “non-hot” ones as I always thought they were cooler and therefore “prettier” anyway. LOL I mean seriously a choice between Joe and Blair? There’s no contest!

As an 80’s girl myself, my men always tended to be the Matthew Brodericks and Jon Cryer’s of the world. My husbands happens to fit that mold too. Which always get’s a laugh when we have this conversation. Which happens more then I’d like to admit. ;~P

Fun post Charlie!

Mine too was Sean Cassidy. I remember for like my 11th birthday I got Sean Cassidy baby blue jeans that were bell bottoms and his face went down one side of the pants and it came with a matching SATIN jacket with his face on the back.

I believe I thought I was the coolest thing ever wearing that outfit!

And Tom Selleck was a FOX!

Astute readers will realize that today is not indeed the first Wednesday of the month. Sorry, the whole New York thing has messed with my coconut.

Starting next month, I will get it right. First Wednesday of each month.

Whew.

Robert Redford…and yes, he was old even back then! Too bad he doesn’t look as good now – he messed up his rugged good looks with plastic surgery.

Also, John Travolta in Grease – what can I say, I had a thing for blue-eyed men!

I used to think that Hayley Mills was cute when I was very young. Pollyanna brought a smile to all the little kids.

Later it was Joyce DeWitt in “3’s Company” and no Susan Summers wasn’t my top pick.

and finally
Marisa Tomei in “My Cousin Vinny”

I’m also not listing the top three, just the ones that come to mind…

1- NKOTB. Yup, all of them. Especially Jon.

2- Corey Haim.

3- Kirk Cameron

4- Michael J Fox

I’m an 80’s girl, too.

First – yes, Charlie, I ate one for breakfast…and key lime works just fine. Now I must cremate the rest of them because there’s no one else to eat them and if I don’t get rid of ’em, they’ll be snarfed by bedtime. Dang.

Now for your question. Hmm. If I had crushes (which I’m not admitting, only supposing) they would have been:

Parker Stevenson (from Probe, a short lived program in the eighties about an eccentric, wealthy genius, not from the Hardy Boys show a decade or so earlier).

Pierce Brosnan from Remington Steele. Yeah, yeah.

Sean Connery. I had a thing for older guys. Still do.

Shade and Sweetwater,
K

I’m old, too:
Alfalfa of “The Little Rascals” (no, I’m not *that* old…they played these on TV when I was a kid).

Donny Osmond. (Purple was my favorite color.)

Hogan of “Hogan’s Heros”.

Harrison Ford (not after Star Wars, but after Indiana Jones…*whew*…that hat is still so hot…)

Does anyone remember Leif Garrett? I’m pretty sure I had a poster of him on my wall when I was a kid!! I had to think long and hard to come up with even that one. I just googled him for fun and I had to laugh! 🙂 What was I thinking? 🙂 Oh, to be a kid again! lol 🙂 OH, and thank you again for the awesome book Charlie! 🙂 I was so thrilled to win it in your last drawing! And to answer your question, I admit I have not read it yet but it’s on my night stand and it’s my full intent to read every last page of your book very soon…when I’m able to stay awake past the news! lol I guess I really am getting old……… (did I just say that?)

Heheh had to be Will Marshall (Wesley Eure) from ‘Land of the Lost’!
Glad I’m not the only one to remember Bobby Sherman…although I knew him from his records, not television. Remember when 45’s came on the back of cereal boxes?? You cut them out, and played them. I SWEAR it’s true! I still have some!

Nuts, I forgot one – I just thought about him today. Danny Kaye. I WILL cop to having a tremendous crush on him. Sigh. Still do. I just adored him, and one of his movies airing on any channel almost guarantees my viewership for that span of hours.

Shade and Sweetwater,
K (who even wrote a poem about him – yes she did)

Oh my, am I the only one that that lived and breathed “Beverly Hills 90210? Luke Perry was my crush. I hated Brandon! I also, had anther secret crush that I never told anyone about, an older man, Victor Newman from “The Young and the Restless”. There is just something about an older man that is rich and has an accent! I’m sick, I know…

John Travolta was and still is # 1 to me. I also loved Donny Osmond, Bobby Sherman, and Parker Stevenson. I’ve always thought Robert Redford was sooooo good looking. When really little I thought Chuck Conners was the best looking man on tv.

The Bay City Rollers!!! Then I matured into Loverboy, Adam Ant and Duran Duran (thanks MTV). I hate to admit it but at 44 (and married) I have a huge crush on Kevin Spacey!!!
